When budget cuts hit the art department at the school where she teaches, Cynthia drew up a nutrition and fitness focussed wellness team, plus built an organic garden to provide food for the cafeteria plus outdoor education!
She started a snack shack at her child’s school that emphasized healthy foods and whole grains while saying no to artificial additives and ingredients. Now, the seventh-graders run the shack themselves like a business!

As a member on a committee to improve school vending machine offerings, she took advantage of the desire for change and spearheaded an entire restructuring of school meals and beverages, plus created opportunities for parent nutrition education!
She brought over 40 local moms together in an effort to raise the “Food IQ” and connect food to every aspect of the school curriculum. She’s also committed to student well-being, promoting the importance of self-care through yoga and breathing exercises!

Her simple school garden project blossomed (pun intended!) into an entire “Seed-N-Feed” curriculum that includes Fresh Fruit Fridays, chef tastings, and partnerships with local restaurants!
A hometown activist, she served as president of the PTA for two years and removed unhealthy offerings from her local school’s snack program. This healthier snacks initiative keeps kids energized so they can learn effectively!
She’s a community college professor that focuses on child growth and development. Since her students are actually teachers themselves (or future teachers!) she uses her unique position to create awareness about kids’ nutrition and its impact on classroom learning!
Known locally as “The Lunch Lady,” she re-vamped an unhealthy (and unpopular!) school lunch program for over 400 kids by making the food herself!
She’s a part of Healthy Kids Choice, a program that seeks to help restaurants provide healthier meal options for kids. She’s also tackling vandalism issues in local parks so kids have a safe place to play and exercise.

She lobbied with other moms for a salad bar in their kids’ school cafeteria. The salad bar now serves over 500 students each day, and will hopefully feature produce from local farmers in the near future!
